Running obstacle course races requires a unique type of fitness. Strictly Type I muscle fiber athletes(marathon runners) have a difficult time with the climbing, moving heavy objects through space and monkey bars. Strictly Type II muscle fiber athletes(power lifters, football linemen, bodybuilders) have a difficult time with the 3 -10 mile running portion. Muscular endurance training embodies both and in my opinion creates the best most well rounded athletes. An example of an effective muscular endurance workout would be pick your three favorite abdominal movements. Start with a two minute light jog or jump rope as a warm up. Pull ups to failure then abdominal movement #1. Push ups to failure then abdominal movement #2. Body Squats to failure then abdominal movement #3. Repeat for muscular endurance strength.

Four weeks into the new year. How are you doing with your goals. Already struggling? Here are some simple questions you can ask yourself. “Have I managed my time well?” Did I do what I said I was going to do?” Have I taken personal responsibility for actions taken or not taken or have I blamed other people or circumstances for my demise?” Do I listen to people who are successful and accomplishing similar goals and what I want to achieve or do I only hear the Naysayers who say it can’t be done. I call them “Dream Stealers”

There will always be something or someone to get in your way. Maybe even you. Get out of your on way. Stop, think, re-assess. One of my goals this year was to run my first half marathon. My training started six weeks ago. The race is in four weeks. Two weeks ago I broke my big toe. Oh well no running. But wait there’s more. I have always found the elliptical machine to be boring and have spent no more than ten minutes on one for my entire athletic existence of more than 35 years. Forced to utilize this form of cardio-respiratory activity as it does not hurt my toe has yielded an amazing unexpected result. The best long distance and non stop, length of time training in my life. I will run the race and ironically it will probably be better than if I would not have injured myself. I’ll keep you posted.

So what is stopping you? Stop, think , re-assess. Sometimes you have to jump out of the way when a car is coming toward you. The car hits a pot hole. Water, snow, ice, mud and planets from another galaxy force you fall into the weeds. Get up brush yourself off and Keep Moving Forward!

Please feel free to apply to any goals whether health, business, fitness or family. The strategies are simple and apply to life. www.FlexBuilding.com

The following video testimonial from Eric Whitehorn is only one example of how much relief and restoration of muscle function can be achieved with the use of chiropractic adjustments and the use of FlexBuilding, a unique system of stretching muscle fiber. Eric was a personal trainer when he had a seizure one day and subsequently learned he had a brain turmor which required immediate surgery.

After brain surgery, additional surgery was required to Eric’s shoulders. Eric suffered complete dislocation of both shoulders with full thickness tears of the rotator cuff muscles. I began treating Eric with FlexBuilding movements to restore function to the muscles and tendons. Regular FlexBuilding stretching is done each week and he continues his recovery.

Eric is now back in the gym working and seeing clients on a regular basis.

Some of the FlexBuilding moves used with Eric will be featured in upcoming blogs.

Hello and Happy New Year to Everyone,

Because I am not one to put out much fluff and I get right to the issues, let’s talk about timing.

Have you said it is not the right time to eat healthy, or it is not the right time to start working out (maybe after the holiday), or it is not the right time to have a baby, or to go back to college, or to propose to your sweetheart, or whatever your personal desires may be that you have been putting off? Timing seems to be a common way to pacify our minds and hearts whenever we are confronted by some “opportunity” that makes us feel we are stepping outside our comfort zone. Immediately our radar goes up, wariness sets in and excuses begin.

Do you remember a time in your life when everything seemed to just click? What did you do to get there? If that worked then, what are you doing to remain there? Oprah had a show where all of the women had lost over 100 pounds but gained it all back. They went through their stories of woe and the “victim” mentality, but no one mentioned why they stopped doing what initially worked to take the weight off. Why do we continually talk about the glory days of what we used to be, but are unwilling to continue to do what got us there in the first place?

Go back to the gym. Change your eating habits. Do those daily “sweet” things for your spouse. Set realistic goals and write them down. And I have to be self serving for a moment–get your adjustments. Immerse yourself in a wellness environment and hang out with like minded people. If you hang out with drunks you become a drunk.

Timing seems to be a wonderful excuse many of us use to pacify our minds and hearts whenever we are confronted by some “opportunity” that makes us feel like we are stepping out of our comfort zone, something makes us feel challenged and our radar goes up, and the excuses begin. We say, “I am going to better my life after the holidays once I get these bills paid from holiday spending,” or, “When the weather gets a little nicer this spring, maybe after Memorial Day.” Then, Memorial Day become the Fourth of July, and its “I’m very busy this summer so this fall I will work on my goals right after Halloween.” That turns into, “The house needs a lot of work to get ready for Thanksgiving,” and as my daughter, Makenna, would say, “Wow-Wow” it’s the holidays.

I do not want to be the bummer coach, but for most folks it means we are stuck in a rut and next year will not bring about some wonderful turnaround. You see…timing is an excuse for most people. It is an excuse difficult for someone else to counter because they are not in your shoes, but they do understand it from their own perspective. Opportunities are like butterflies. They often are right there and are beautiful in front of your nose but instead of seizing the moment, you shoo it away like some bothersome fly, and say, “The timing is just not right.”

As a wellness coach it is my responsibility to help you realize your dreams and keep moving forward. Quit being paralyzed by your rational mind and commit to something. Find someone to hold you accountable. Now is the right time!!!

Dr. Pruni

Okay, I did not get the opportunity to blog before Thanksgiving to give you the inspirational talk saying don’t over indulge in eating, drinking, etc. However, now that the Thanksgiving holiday excess is over, what about the next five weeks? Before you beat yourself up that you did, in fact, say “just one more sweet potato, piece of turkey, cranberry sauce, pumpkin, pie, spoonful of stuffing…” well, you get the picture, (you are laughing to yourself because it is true) there is a way out of this.

If you are trying to lose weight or trying to stick to an exercise program during the holiday, instead of making unrealistic goals just know that you are going to cut back on training, spend more time with family and hit it harder in a few weeks. For now just coast. What I have observed as a wellness consultant over twenty years is the “all or nothing” stance like, “I blew my diet so *&%# it, I am not exercising and I am going to eat whatever I want because it doesn’t matter anyway.” Remember, “coasting” does not mean doing nothing. You can always do FlexBuilding at home.

I hear the laughter again. Laughing is good, at least that is a healthy release of emotion. What is the goal behind your diet and exercise? Isn’t it a better quality of life. The old saying “Everything in Moderation” is timeless. Straying from your diet and exercise to enjoy other aspects of life is well….LIFE.

Also, the new book is out and the FlexBuilding video ($29.94) to work along with the book is $24.95. Just for the Holiday Season from December 1 to December 22 at 5:oo pm the book and video combination is only $34.95. To order call 770-979-FLEX (3539).

Many Blessings to all of you this holiday and always,

Dr. Robert Pruni

The FlexBuilding Total Wellness blog is dedicated to all things natural. It is my goal to educate as many people as possible about natural health, peak performance, optimal wellness, and how to establish a better mind-body connection. Some of the concepts will originate from my own materials. On some other concepts I will offer my opinions as to the benefit and value of other natural health approaches. Topics will include everything from my full range of motion stretching with full range of motion resistance workout rehabilitation called FlexBuilding, to other options such as weight lifting, weight loss, neurofeedback training, and how the brain can be reprogrammed in cases of neurological disregulation syndromes.

It is also the intent of this blog to offer safe alternatives for highly ineffective, overutilized medical procedures and medication. It is my genuine interest to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of all types of health care, medical or otherwise, and offer opinions so readers can make well thought-out , educated decisions in their own health care.

Many of you have heard the saying, “Nothing or no one is all good or all bad.” The same holds true with professions and businesses. It is our job as health care consumers to take in as much information as possible and formulate our own best strategy. After all, this is the information age.

I look forward to sharing with you.
